Reclaimed Wood Frames

I am married to an artist.  Not only in the fields of carpentry and tile, but as a potter and a painter as well.  We have his art pieces placed throughout our home.  You have already seen some of his pottery in previous posts, and his paintings have also been in the background of several photos.  When we were moving in and decorating out newly remodeled abode, we came across some oil paintings that Kyle did when I was pregnant with our first child.  I would go to bed at 8:00 pm, and he would stay up late and paint.  Alone, these paintings looked colorful and funky, but they needed more character…they needed to be framed.  We happened to have quite a bit of left-over reclaimed wood from our sun-room ceiling.  Kyle quickly assembled two custom frames for his paintings that are now hanging in our living room.

We also have three reclaimed wood framed mirrors in our house.  One of them is the result of me deciding to try my hand at wood burning after Kyle assembled the frame out of left over trim from a job he was on.  I decided to finish it off with a zero VOC white wash, and then I took it to our local glass shop to get a custom cut of mirrored glass to fit the frame.

Another of these mirrors hangs in our bathroom.  This time I found an old beat up wood vanity at our local recycle center here on the coast.  It did not have a mirror in it, so I again went to our glass shop and had them cut a custom mirror to fit.  I rather like the vintage look of this one.

Finally, we have a full-length reclaimed wood framed mirror in our new bedroom.  This one is made out of the left-overs that we had from our floor.  As I mentioned in an earlier post, this wood is reclaimed fir from a barn in the Dalles.  We bought these left-overs at a discounted price from a contractor who had just installed it into a million dollar home here on the coast.  It is really gorgeous wood, rich with character and complex patterns.  The mirror is just a plain glass full-length mirror that we picked up at Home Depot years ago.  Not the greenest, or the most local place to shop, but we try to keep a good balance of affordability with conscientiousness.

If making reclaimed wood frames is something that interests you, I encourage you to try it!  They really do add some rustic artistic flare to your home.  If you don’t have the time/interest/tools to make them, there are some really great spots to buy them online.  Etsy.com is a good place to start shopping.  I am impressed with this artist that sells reclaimed wood frames on Etsy.  I’m sure that you could find more with just a wee bit of effort searching the site.

I also love searching Pinterest.com for this sort of thing.  If you want to follow me and see what I find, click the red Pinterest button at the bottom of the page to get to my profile.  I occasionally come across some pretty inspiring stuff.  Until next time, happy framing….
